I have an insatiable curiosity about the world, and I love to tell stories about my experiences - especially my emotional experiences. These stories are told through my use of color. Color is visceral. It is organic. It affects people by speaking directly to their joy and pain. I want my paintings to bring joy to the viewer, to offer a visual oasis from the aridity of daily life. My work seeks to reach the intuitive in the viewer; to access the sensual; to provoke thought; and to delight the senses. Connecting emotionally is my focus, my goal.
My work is intense and very physical. I start with a narrative, and I work exclusively in series in order to explore that narrative. I work on flat surfaces, and typically I work on larger scale works. Using tools, rather than brushes, I apply layer upon layer of color, creating new colors in the process. This layering is integral to my work. I have experimented with acrylic paints for several years to find the right materials to produce a translucency suggesting hidden depths. The paintings find completion when I break through all the layers to expose the underlying hues - my signature colors of bright, warm shades of red, orange, or yellow - like the heat of the sun. This process has been intuitive a symbol of optimism in the face of adversity. It is a metaphor for my life.
